About the time the girls’ parents divorced, she had started to come into herself. She began to feel a sense of freedom. When she was away from her home she knew that she could separate herself from all the chaos of her life.
She had decided that she wanted to be friends with the popular girls. They were confident about themselves and they seemed like they were always having fun. Soon she made lots of friends and was having a lot of fun also. When she wasn’t caring for her sisters and brother she would be at her friends’ houses.
There were lots of boys that started to pay attention to her and this made her feel special. She and her friend rode their bikes that summer to the adjoining town to go to the pool and they met boys that were from there. They would call and want her and her friends to come over to their houses. Knowing these boys made the other girls in the school want to be friends with her. They would talk on the phone to the boys until late at night from her friends’ houses. They would also play night games until late in her friends’ neighborhood. It was more fun than she ever thought she could have.
When school started that year she was in the popular crowd… She was having so much fun. There were a couple of the older boys that wanted to date her. She knew she looked older than she was and that she was too young to date. She would still meet them at church and she would go to the games at the high school and go to the boy’s houses. One boy wanted to get serious… he started to try and do things with her other than kiss. She did not like how this made her feel. She would tell him NO, but every time they were together he would try again. It really frightened her. It seemed that whenever any boy went with her he wanted to do things that she didn't like. It always made her remember what her father had done with her. She did her best to stay away from that feeling.
There was this one boy that hung out with one of her friends’ boyfriend and he had a cool car. He had tickets to a concert and everyone knew that he was looking for someone to take. The girl was hoping that it could be her… even though he didn't know her very well. He ended up taking someone else and that made the girl wish that she knew him better. That same boy was at a dance after the game and he had needed someone to drive him and his friend home. The girl was in the back seat with him and he kissed her. The kiss was not very good, mostly because he was not in a state to be kissing. It made the girl laugh… she thought it was cute.
There was this one girl that could sing really well and she was really pretty and popular. She didn't pay much attention to the girl which kind of made the girl jealous. She went to her birthday party with another friend even though she wasn't invited. She had decided that day that she wanted to this girls friend. So she was… they were the best of friends. She could always tell her everything except about what had happened with her father. The best friends’ mother was really strict and made her friend come home every day so it worked out really well because the girl would just go home with her. Now that the girl’s sisters and brother were old enough she didn't have to care for them and her mother did not seem to care that she was never home. She spent a lot of time with her best friend. She loved that there were boys at her house all the time, her best friend had brothers and they would look out for them. Her best friend also felt a lot like the girl did. When they would do something that they didn't want to do again they would help each other so the next time they would be better.
The best friend got a boyfriend and she wanted the girl to go on a double date with her. When the girl found out who the date was going to be with, she was hesitant… she remembered the kiss. The boy that wanted to get serious with her previously had written in her yearbook that this boy had a crush on her. It was also that same boy that had the concert tickets that had never asked her. When they went on the date they ended up parking. The best friend was in the front seat while the girl was in the back seat and nothing happened… which was different for the girl and she didn't know what to think. He had come over to her house after that and took her on a few dates and he hadn't even tried to kiss her. She finally decided that if he was not going to kiss her, then she would kiss him. One night she was standing at the front door and he was hanging on the porch and… she kissed him. She did not feel the same way around him that she felt around the other boys. That summer was the best summer ever… she spent a lot of time with the boy and her best friend. They went many places together with the boy and his friend. The boy drove a really cool sports car that had a top that came down. They drove around and listened to music… Carly Simon was singing “That’s the Way I heard it Should Be “. They went to the movies and went to get pizza a lot. The girl really liked the boy and wanted to be with him all the time.
The girl started school that year in love. All she knew is that she felt so good around him. He treated her so well and she was sure they were going to get married. They had talked about it, even though she knew she was too young. They could get engaged and wait until she finished school. Everyone would tell her that she was crazy to be so serious with just one boy. She tried to like other boys but none of them made her feel like this boy did. The girls’ mother really liked the boy and let him come over and stay as much as he wanted. The boy and the girl had started to get to a place where they were really comfortable with each other. A lot of people would say… to comfortable. They both knew that they needed to slow down or they would not be able to last until she graduated.
The boy’s friend that was her best friends boyfriend had a sister in Alaska and the boy and his friend decided to go up there and work. They had heard that they could go and make a lot more money than they could in their own town because of a pipeline they were building. The boy thought it was a good idea since he and the girl felt they were getting too serious. So the boy went and the girl was really sad for it seemed to be a long time.
In the beginning the girl wrote a lot of letters. She couldn't call him because the long distant charge for the phone was so much money. She would wait for his letters but they would take a long time to come from so far away. When she did receive a letter she would be so happy. The letters began to slow down and they would only talk on the phone every few weeks.
Soon the weather started to warm up the girl found other things to do with her time. Her and her best friend spent more time together than ever before. They would write letters to each other during class even though they would be together as soon as class was over. They were both really lucky because there were always boys that wanted them to hang out and do things on the weekends. They would go to the games and to the dances. Life was good… even though her boy was away and doing what he needed to do for himself. And so it was that life brought her many new adventures and people that summer.
The girls’ mother decided she wanted to move out of the house that her father was paying for. It was time for the mother to separate herself from the father. The mother had herself a new man in her life and this man made her mother really happy. The girl was really excited at first. She could never remember living anywhere but the same town. The place where the girl moved to was an apartment building and there were people there that really scared her. They would always want to fight the girl and they would call her names like “White honky bitch” and one time a girl pulled out a knife on her because she didn't like her going to the pool. This made the girl want to stay at her friend’s house more than ever. She was really blessed to have somewhere she could go and feel safe.
Oh that summer… so much fun… so many boys….so many older boys from another town. There were lots of people… people that were from her school and people from other schools. The boys that had their own house were really nice to the girl and her friends. They would call them jail bait and would look after them and let them know if they felt that they were getting into trouble. The girl and her best friend had huge crushes on a couple of the boys. They were really lucky to be with these boys that did not take advantage of them. The girl could not believe herself… she had come to know so many people that summer. Some of them taught her how she did not want to be and who she did not want to be with. She knew even more that she absolutely loved who her boy was and how he was with her. She was even surer she was going to marry him. Meanwhile she just enjoyed all the attention and had so much fun. The summer was almost over and the boy decided he wanted to come home. That was exciting for her and she couldn't wait but… what about all this that she was doing? Did she want it to come to an end? How would he coming home change what was her life now?
